Divorce: you're not alone

At Parker Coles Curtis, we speak with people every day who feel overwhelmed by the idea of separating. Often, they’re nervous about what lies ahead, unsure of what’s “normal,” and worried about what others may think. These are all normal responses that people have when faced uncertainty and tumult. During times like these, it's not uncommon for people to feel like they’re alone in their own sea of troubles.
But you’re not alone...the data tell us that 1 in 3 marriages in Australia end in divorce.
According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, around 33% of all marriages in Australia will ultimately end in divorce. That’s one in every three—a third of all couples.
Endings of significant relationships happen to more people than you might think.
The latest divorce stats in Australia (2023)
Here’s what else the latest data shows:
- 0.23% of adults divorced in 2023 – the lowest annual rate in 50 years, but still representing tens of thousands of Australians
- The average marriage length before divorce is 13 years, with many couples separating after 20+ years together
- Nearly half of divorces involve children under 18,
- Same-gender divorces are increasing, showing that separation affects all types of relationships
Let’s continue the conversation
Despite how common divorce is, many people still feel a sense of stigma about the dissolution of their marriage or long-term partnership. There are many different reasons why someone delays asking for help, continues to stay in unhappy or unsafe situations or goes about the separation alone.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Just like we talk openly about our careers, parenting, and health— open conversations about separation and divorce can be the norm. And when we normalise divorce, we also make space for healing, growth, and new beginnings.
